You might have heard of Kung Poa Chicken, General Tso chicken, and even Szechuan chicken, too, but the Tai Chien chicken is like a distant cousin who has been removed twice and warmly welcomed again. But one thing is sure the Tai Chien Chicken recipe may summarise all these dishes with the almost same origin.

Originally the dish has an origin in Szechuan, China, and it literally translates into “Hot Wok” even though it is not very hot and spicy. Maybe the “hot wok” is derived from frying the chicken in the hot wok and then tossing it in the sauce, just a wild guess. Egg white: We are using egg white for making the chicken crispy for the recipe. It might not be a traditional method usually used in Chinese cooking, but it is worth the crispy texture.

Corn Starch: Corn starch is another element we are using to make the chicken crispy. The corn starch and egg white mixture make the crispy and light coating around the chicken.

Garlic: Like any other Asian dish, garlic is the main element and must-to-have. The garlic gives the dish a mild spicy kick with a deliciously garlicky aroma.

Ginger: Ginger is another important element of Asian cooking. It adds freshness, and pepperiness with a hint of sweetness. It also gives off a sweet and pungent aroma that will tease your sense.

Chicken Stock: We are using chicken stock to adjust the required consistency of the sauce and have a deep umami flavor. Try to have a low-sodium option since the sauces are already high in salt, and the stock will make the dish way too salty.

Crunchy Peanut butter: Crunchy peanut butter will make the sauce super creamy with sweet and salty flavor. The crunchy peanut butter will add a crunchy peanuts element to the dish too.

Ingredients For Tai Chien Chicken Recipe

  • 2 pounds Chicken thighs, In-Bone and Skinless
  • 1 Egg white Tai Chien Chicken Recipe
  • 1 tbsp Corn Starch
  • 5 Garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tsp Ginger, freshly grated
  • 4 tbsp Sesame Oil
  • 3 tbsp Soya Sauce
  • 1 tbsp Chili Sauce
  • 1 tbsp Hoisin Sauce
  • ½ cup low-sodium Chicken Stock
  • 3 tbsp Crunchy Peanut butter
  • 1 tbsp Brown sugar
  • 1 tsp Black Pepper
  • Salt to taste
  • Green Onions, for garnish

Method For Tai Chien Chicken Recipe

  1. In a bowl, mix 1 tbsp sesame oil, soya sauce, chili sauce and hoisin sauce.
  2. In a spread bowl, mix the chicken thighs with 1 tbsp of the sauce mixture, corn starch and egg white. Marinate it for 15 minutes.
  3. In a skillet, add 2 tbsp sesame oil and heat it on low to medium flame.
  4. Add the marinated chicken to the oil and cook until the chicken is crispy.
  5. Take the chicken out and set it aside.
  6. In the same skillet, add the remaining sesame oil, garlic, and ginger. Sauté for a minute.
  7. Now add the remaining sauce mixture, brown sugar, a pinch of salt, and pepper.
  8. The mixture will thicken, add the chicken stock to the skillet and cook until the sauce reaches the desired consistency.
  9. Add chicken to the sauce and cook for a minute.
  10. Now add the crunchy peanut butter and cook for another minute until everything is well combined and the chicken is coated.
  11. Taste for the salt and add, if necessary, at this point.
  12. Serve hot with a garnish of spring onions over noodles or rice.
